Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to participate in environmentally sustainable work practices.

The unit applies to individuals who participate in environmentally sustainable work practices under general supervision with limited autonomy or accountability.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Identify current resource use

1.1 Identify and report workplace environmental hazards to supervisor

1.2 Identify resources used in own work role

1.3 Measure and record current usage of resources using appropriate techniques

1.4 Identify workplace environmental and resource efficiency issues

1.5 File documentation measuring current usage

2. Comply with environmental work practices

2.1 Follow workplace environmental procedures

2.2 Report breaches or potential breaches to supervisor

2.3 Follow changes to work practices and procedures

3. Seek opportunities to improve resource efficiency

3.1 Work with supervisor to identify possible areas for improvements to work practices in own work area

3.2 Make suggestions for improvements to workplace practices in own work area

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has participated in environmentally sustainable work practices on at least one occasion, and has:

  • identified and measured resources used in own work role
  • identified workplace environmental and resource efficiency issues
  • recorded measurements of current usage
  • followed workplace procedures to ensure compliance.

And has on at least two occasions:

  • identified and reported workplace environmental hazards to supervisor
  • reported breaches or potential breaches to supervisor
  • worked with supervisor to identify possible areas for improvements.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • environmental and resource hazards and risks relevant to industry sector, including:
  • plastics
  • chemicals
  • hazardous materials
  • waste materials
  • principles of sustainability, including the economy, society, and the environment
  • procedures for reporting environmental and resource hazards and risks, and environment and resource efficiencies and inefficiencies
  • resources used in own industry sector, including:
  • labour
  • electricity
  • financial
  • time
  • environmental resources used in own industry sector, including:
  • land
  • soil
  • water
  • vegetation
  • relevant environmental and resource efficiency systems, procedures and improvement processes
  • workplace environmental practices, instructions and procedures relevant to participating in environmentally sustainable work practices.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of the skills in this unit of competency must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • a workplace setting or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • workplace environmental practices, instructions and procedures relevant to participating in environmentally sustainable work practices
  • relationships:
  • supervisor.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
